When the fire is kindled, it ignites the sense of commitment towards the cause of reducing the burden of oral cancer for human kind. Passing the flame from one to another, expresses the handing down of this symbolic message from generation to generation. Moreover, there is a need to refill the torch with energy and enthusiasm, which signify the ever increasing demand for creating awareness and also transmit a message of compassion and empathy along its route.
Oral cancer is 6th most common disease worldwide. In India it is single most common oral malignancy. 90% Oral Cancer are Squamous Cell Carcinomas. It is a multi-step, genetic process with poorer prognosis. The single most prevalent etiological factor is tobacco.
Many cancer cases precede with obvious clinical changes define as potentially malignant disorders. These are generally asymptomatic and the patients rarely notice these gradual changes. If detected at these early stages, the treatment will result in good prognosis
Awareness of ill effects of tobacco and educating the masses about the causative factors is of utmost importance and necessity
Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology has instituted this torch as a symbol of creating nationwide awareness of oral cancer which shall run through various dental establishments in India carrying the logo : “I CAN WE CAN INDIA CAN”.
WE CAN : We can collectively succeed in creating awareness and reducing the burden of oral cancer.
The IAOMP has initiated an awareness campaign symbolised by a TORCH, promoting early detection of oral cancer through the slogan, "I CAN WE CAN, INDIA CAN" . SKSS Dental College and Hospital gratefully received the torch from Sri Ramachandra Dental College and Hospital, Chennai to carry forward the legacy of anticancer awareness program with Principal Gaganjot Kaur leading a pledge-taking ceremony involving faculty and students.
On July 19, 2024, Renaissance Convent School, Mullanpur, to continue with the torch legacy, a dental camp was organised. The camp included NUKKAD NATAK and an enlightening lecture. Over 200 students were benefited from the camp. Students of SKSS Dental College and Hospital participated in poster making and short video making competition in college campus.
ON July 20, 2024, SKSS Dental College And Hospital became a focal point for Anti- Cancer Program. Dr. ISH PAUL, a distinguished guest speaker, underscored the critical importance of oral cancer awareness during the event. The program featured a TORCH holding walkathon and pledge ceremony with coalition of medical, dental faculty and enthusiastic students. The activities culminated in a spirited prize distribution with highlight including a campus rally and NUKKAD NATAK in village SARABHA as well as college campus
On July 2024, SKSS Dental College and Hospital, collaborated with Govt. Health Care Centers, Sub centre Sarabha, The camp aimed at raising awareness about oral cancer, offering screening to detect cancer early.
On July 23, 2024, SKSS dental college and hospital took a proactive step in promoting oral health at CHC, Pakhowal. A compelling lecture on tobacco awareness was given along with Nukkad Natak performance. More than 70 patients were were benefited through oral screening.
The thême of World No Tobacco Day 2024 - “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference” is focusing on advocating for an end to the targeting of youth with harmful tobacco products. To justify this theme SKSS dental college and hospital has organised “No Tobacco Campaign” from 20 th may to 5 th June which will embrace activities like Nukkad Natak in villages as well as various health care centres, screening camps, no tobacco rally , poster and rangoli competition.
